This month we would like for you to learn about online communities and make new connections.
Take a look at the slideshow available on HPL's wiki: http://10.34.145.39/twiki/bin/view/HPL/TechClasses
Explore the Wikipedia list of social networking websites at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_social_networking_websites
Write about your experiences! Become a fan of Houston Public Library on Facebook. Can you find other HPL staff in LinkedIn? Take a look at some of the hobby sites such as Ravelry or Bake Space. How is social networking important to you as a public library staff?

the slideshow is actually at http://10.34.145.39/twiki/bin/viewfile/HPL/TechClasses?rev=1;filename=fun_with_flickr_show.ppt
...I've heard of Flickr but didn't realize that it cost money!
I watched the slideshow about social networking and perused the long list on Wikipedia. I joined the Facebook and Linkedin networks, and became a fan of the Houston Public Library in Facebook; I found the page for this group to be attractive, inviting and useful. I was not able to find names of HPL employees that I knew in Linkedin. I joined the LibraryThing network, and was amazed at the long list of resources offered and things you could do there. I added my favorite novel by my favorite author to my LibraryThing list (Lost Horizon by James Hilton), and might add other titles in order to learn about other “read-a-like” titles and authors. It is wise to become conversant with Social Networking because these resources are becoming widespread and popular for our customers and more commonly used by many professions, including the library field.
To find all the slideshows, follow this path: TWiki>HPL Web>Training Materials> Tech Classes. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see all the slideshow attachments.
